Unique Projects

We are happy to hop on board any unique projects you may have.

In November 2009 we were involved in a unique project. A rare opportunity arose to manufacture two genuine steam locomotives for a unique client. The project was to build two models of the West Australian Government Railway “W” Class locomotives in twelve-inch gauge (305mm).

Approximately one-third of the original size, the locomotives are fully detailed and steam-driven. The work includes boilers, chassis, cylinders, valve gear, wheels and axles, brakes, and matching tenders. The original locomotives were built in 1951, but the design of the replicas is up to date with modern principles wherever practical.

With the locomotives and tenders weighing 3.5 tonnes each, they present unique design and construction challenges. Working from detailed 3D CAD models and drawings, the manufacturing is done using modern CNC machining methods. We used this for both mechanical parts and the casting patterns. The Locomotive boilers and all steam control valves and accessories are manufactured to AS1228-2006 standards.

In 2011 after the first Two” W” class locomotives were built the project went into phase two, when two Replica Garrett WAGR were built. These two Locomotives were even more challenging with articulated boiler chassis and steam cylinders front and back.

Together with dedicated engineers, knowledgeable steam enthusiasts and skilled Kentin staff, the result was outstanding, and is a true representation of dedication and quality workmanship Kentin has to offer.

A special thanks to all involved in the manufacturing of these magnificent machines.
